Commodities vs. The Dollar Index (DXY)
The comparison chart below highlights the direct correlation between the Dollar Index and its ramifications across a number of commodities. The main worry for the short term commodity prices still remains the potential for a Dollar index breakout. You will see from the second chart attached, that the DXY is starting to creep higher once again after a period of decline. We will continue to watch the charts below tick for tick for any potential breakouts or breakdowns.

The Dollar Index (DXY)
I highlighted the dollar index a couple of days ago, as an important index to keep a close eye on as any move back toward the top end of the index could cause commodities to sell off once again. The index has started to edge higher once again, and look as if it is on course to test the recent high at 83.542.

Saints & Sinners: Oil & Gas???
() continued its push higher again today, adding another 5.15% to 22.375p during afternoon trading as the market continued to cheer JP Morgan Chase & Co. taking a 5.15% holding in the company. We (Fox Davies) currently have a BUY recommendation on the stock with a 65p price target.
() pushed 3% to 365p during early trading after the company said that its non-executive chairman Kevin Lyon bought 20,000 shares at 360 pence a time and now has 80,000. The shares price did tack a recent turn for the worst after the company said that drilling had been completed on the Tryfan prospect located in U.K. Block 3/17, and the well had been plugged and abandoned. The well encountered both Frigg and Dornoch sandstones on prognosis with a small gas column present at the top of the Frigg formation interpreted to be sub-commercial.
() pushed 2% higher to 98p during afternoon trading on the back of Singer Capital Markets placing a BUY rating on the stock with a 160p price target. The shares are a long way off of the recent highs of 140p and the low 90s have now set a decent support level for the company.
() jumped 10% to 4.425p at the mid-price during early trading after the company said that the Ntorya-1 well, its natural-gas discovery in the Ruvuma Basin in southern Tanzania, has been tested and demonstrated strong commercial potential. The well flowed gas at a maximum rate of 20.1 million standard cubic feet a day--the equivalent of 3,350 barrels of oil a day--and an estimated 139 barrels a day of very light gas condensate. Small volumes of formation water were also produced. said the data gathered during testing indicates an initial reservoir pressure of 5,424 pounds per square inch. The successful testing of this reservoir will be followed by a seismic survey program later in the year to gain a fuller understanding of the extent of this discovery and identify further drilling targets.
() pushed 10% to 0.53p on the back of the update. The company plans to farm-down, or sell, half of its 25% stake in the Ruvuma basin in Tanzania, in exchange for the cost of its share of the work program, including the drilling of two more exploration wells, some seismic surveys and possibly a well appraising its recent Ntorya-1 gas discovery, the CEO said Thursday. "From a Solo point of view, we've ended up with a bigger share of this than we had originally intended. We've got 25%, and we'd be happier with a smaller share, so we'll use some of the excess equity to farm-down and get someone to carry out some more work for us, and add some value at no cost to us," Chief Executive Neil Ritson told Dow Jones Newswires on a call. "I think we'll probably look to halve our stake back to our original 12.5%. For that we would anticipate getting quite a bit of the forward work program done," the CEO said. 's subsidiary Ndovu Resources Ltd. is operator of the Ruvuma Basin production sharing agreement, with PLC (SOLO.LN) holding the remaining 25%.
Antrim Energy () slipped 11% to 32p during afternoon trading after the company announced that in connection with the recently completed transaction with Crown Point Ventures Ltd., involving Antrim's assets in Argentina, Dr. Brian Moss has accepted a position with Crown Point and has resigned his position as an Antrim Board Member and as Executive Vice President, Latin America. Brian was instrumental in adding significant value to the Antrim properties in Argentina and the Board of Antrim wishes to thank Brian for his considerable contribution to the Company.
Saints & Sinners: Mining???
() continued its recent bearish form, slipping another 6.5% to 45.55p during early trading. The company has given a number of bearish updates over the last few months, and the market has continued to act accordingly. The 52 week high for the stock is 330p, a long way from the new 52 week low printed today at 45.356p.
() dropped 22% to 3.5p at the mid-price during early trading after the company reported a significantly widened pre-tax loss for the first half of the year and said that annual levels of production will be reduced until coal prices recover. Pre-tax loss for the six months ended April 1 was 7.1 million pounds, versus a loss of GBP3.6 million for the year ago period. Adjusted operating loss of GBP3.9 million versus a profit of GBP1.7 million. Revenue of GBP44.6 million versus GBP33.9 million Diluted loss per share 12.8 pence versus a loss of 7.9 pence. Adjusted diluted loss per share of 7.7 pence versus a loss of 0.4 pence. Sales of 796,000 tons versus 706,000 tons. Net borrowings at GBP30.6 million versus GBP31.5 million as at Oct. 2, 2011. Production costs increased due to increased mining ratios and higher gas oil costs. Further measures will be implemented to minimize operating costs and capital expenditure. Exceptional write off of work in progress of GBP2.0 million in respect of increased workings at Muir Dean. Proved and probable reserves of 7 million tons versus 7.9 million tons. Applications for two new sites totalling 1.7 million tons submitted into planning. Trading conditions are expected to remain challenging.
Noventa () slipped another 15% to 1.9p during early trading after the company reported a wider full year pre-tax loss and said that previous fundraising proposals for development have been dropped. Revenue in year ended Dec. 31 $5.61 million (2010: $2.3 million) Pre-tax loss $54.71 million (2010: $10.32 million) Diluted loss per share 95.9 cents (2010: 75 cents) Cash and cash equivalents at year end $7.87 million (2010: $23.4 million) Development will be supported by the current additional funding being sought of $35 million. Board is exploring two options to raise this finance, being either through loan financing from Richmond, the company's largest shareholder, or through an equity offering. Proposals previously announced on May 11, 2012 will now no longer be undertaken. In the event that the company is unable to secure the new funding on acceptable terms, there is a risk that the company may lose its concessions and that it may also become insolvent, not least due to the requirement to repay $7.7 million of short term debt provided by Richmond subsequent to the year-end which falls due on July 31, 2012.
() fell 40% to 1.1p during afternoon trading after the company said that it raised ?2.2 million pounds by placing 220 million ordinary shares with new and existing shareholders at 1 pence per share, and said the funds will be used to implement its 2012 exploration program. The Program is across highly prospective Austrian gold and precious metal assets, with a particular focus on its 51 sq. km Rotgulden gold and precious metal licence where results to date have demonstrated the project's exciting regional potential.
() jumped 15% to 0.78p during afternoon trading on the back of its update yesterday that said drilling results for the Ernest Giles project in Australia has confirmed gold mineralization. Four reverse circulation (RC) holes have been completed to date at Ernest Giles, three holes at the Calanchini target area and one hole at the Peterswald target area. Gold mineralization has been intersected at Calanchini. Prospective Archean basement occurred at shallower depths than expected at Calanchini; from 129 meter below surface. Archean basement was not intersected at the Peterswald area hole.
() eased 11% to 4.2p after the company announced late in the session that its subsidiary, Temir Service LLP has repaid a total of $2.5 million to ATF Bank Kazakhstan scheduled for repayment before July 1 in accordance with the terms of the refinancing announced on May 10.

Film becomes 13th consecutive Pixar film to debut at #1.
By Ryan J. Downey
There's nothing unlucky about the number 13 for Disney/Pixar. Over the weekend, "Brave" became the 13th consecutive film from the animation unit behind "Toy Story" and "Wall-E" to debut at #1. The animated archery adventure hit a box-office bull's-eye to the tune of $66.7 million, according to estimates. And cartoons dominated the weekend box office as DreamWorks' "Madagascar 3" landed at #2.
Unfortunately for Fox, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was not so lucky. The $69 million-budget historical/ fantasy mash-up opened at #3 with just $16.5 million.
"Brave" opened stronger than last year's "Cars 2," which bears the distinction of being the only Pixar film with a "rotten" critical average on Rotten Tomatoes. While reviews for "Brave" weren't as overwhelmingly enthusiastic as those for flicks like "Toy Story 3" and "Wall-E," the studio's latest still boasts a 74 percent score on the film-review-aggregator site.
The opening numbers for "Brave" were the fifth-highest for Pixar (ninth when adjusted for ticket price inflation). "Toy Story 3" ranks at #1 in both categories, with its astonishing $110 million opening (on slightly fewer screens than "Brave," to boot) two years ago. Audiences gave "Brave" a CinemaScore of "A."
"Brave" is the first Disney/Pixar to center on a female protagonist, telling the story of a Scottish princess who bucks tradition to shape her own destiny. It was nearly the first Pixar film to be directed by a woman too. Brenda Chapman, who conceived the story, was replaced mid-production by Mark Andrews.
Box-office prognosticators were right on the money late last week when it came to "Brave," but the numbers for "Lincoln" were even lower than most of them projected. IMDb's Keith Simanton told MTV News that the Tim Burton-produced book adaptation would need to match the $23 million collected by "Zombieland" on opening weekend to be considered a success. "I'm putting it at $19 million. But it may be closer to $17 million," he predicted.
"Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which was #1 for two weekends in a row, took in $20.2 million in its third weekend in theaters for a domestic total of $157.6 million. "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" made a total of $180 million after it opened in 2008. The first "Madagascar" film cleared $193.5 million three years before. "Madagascar 3" is the best-reviewed of the series. "This is the rare animated property that has consistently improved on its ho-hum origins," Variety's Justin Chang wrote.
"Prometheus" grossed another $10 million for a $108.5 million total. Box-office bombs "Rock of Ages" and "That's My Boy" fell even further in their second weekends, grossing just $8 million (against a $75 million budget) and $7.9 million, respectively. "Rock of Ages" has made $28.8 million to date; "That's My Boy," $28.2 million.
In limited release, "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" collected $3.8 million in its debut. The Focus Features film starring Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley played in 1,625 locations, versus the 4,164 where "Brave" was available. The Los Angeles Times reported that the film was expected to open with at least $7 million.
Woody Allen's "To Rome With Love" made $379,371 on just five screens. That's the second-best per-screen average this year, behind "Moonrise Kingdom," which averaged $130,749 across four theaters last month. Last year, "Midnight in Paris" became Allen's highest-grossing picture ever and was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. "Paris" boasted a 93 percent Tomatometer rating, however, whereas "Rome" sat at 55 percent at press time.
Next weekend's new releases include "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane's live-action directorial debut, "Ted," which stars Mark Wahlberg; male stripper tale "Magic Mike," with Channing Tatum; the Chris Pine/ Elizabeth Banks dramedy "People Like Us"; and Tyler Perry's "Madea's Witness Protection Program."

BILLINGS - It's a hot summer day, but many Billings kids skipped the pool for a day on the court.
A local church is hosting a basketball camp on Billings South Side. 150 kids had some healthy competition Friday at the first upward basketball camp. The day was filled with basketball drills, games, contests and life lessons.
West High grad and pro basketball player Mandy Morales says the camp is a great way to give kids a positive summer experience and lessons for success. "I mean basketball really kept me going and everything so I just think this is a great opportunity for them." said Morales.
Ten year old Oran Nash is a camp participant and he plans to be an NBA basketball player, he says the camp has been very helpful towards meeting his goals and encourages participants to dream big! "Do what you're capable of, it doesn't matter if it's not sports...it can be on a video game, anything that you want, even if it's something that people think is girly. It's what you want. It's what you want to do, It's your future." said Nash.
Each participant received a basketball camp T-shirt, water bottle and an Upward Sports basketball. Organizers hope to raise funds to improve a basketball court in the South Side for a second camp in August.

Beijing still shows extreme sensitivity to the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square. China's version of Twitter is censoring everything from today's date to the word 'candle.'
By Peter Ford,?Staff writer / June 4, 2012
Enlarge? For the 23rd year in a row, the Chinese authorities today continued their efforts to impose collective amnesia about the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4, 1989, seeking to stamp out any public reference to the event.

For Beijing, the date, ?6.4? as it has become known in China, is one not to be commemorated, but rather obliterated from the calendar. The government has always refused to discuss what happened when soldiers were ordered to disperse pro-democracy demonstrators on Tiananmen Square. Officially, they killed only about 200 protesters; but activists? estimates range from several hundreds to several thousands.
The official blanket denial of the date has worked, to a large extent: Few ordinary Chinese citizens under the age of 30 are aware of the Tiananmen demonstrations or their tragic end. But censors remain determined to foil any attempt by people who do know what happened to say anything about it. Anything at all.
Censors at Sina Weibo, the popular Twitter-like social media platform, were working overtime to block searches for ? or references to ? ?6.4? or other obvious signifiers such as ?tank,? ?crush,? ?never forget,? and ?square.?
?535? was a forbidden term, too, because Internet users have taken to referring to May 35,? instead of June 4. Classically minded censors wouldn?t let you post anything with VIIIIXVIIV in it either, in case readers familiar with Roman numerals could decipher 89.6.4. And by late afternoon, even the word ?today? had been banned.
Over the weekend, Sina Weibo disabled its candle icon, which users might find an appropriate symbol with which to commemorate the Tiananmen dead. An explanation from the website said the icon was ?currently being optimized? but nobody believed it. Before long there were 200,000 posts on Sina referring to ?Weibo? and ?candle? and the next thing anyone knew, the word ?candle? itself became a banned search term.
As if to highlight the absurdity of how hard Sina Weibo censors were working, an impeccable and seemingly?irrelevant source of information, the Shanghai Stock Exchange, suddenly turned subversive. By an extraordinary coincidence (or maybe not), the Shanghai Composite Index, which measures the market?s daily movement, fell on Monday by 64.89 points, in an uncensorable reminder of the date of the massacre.
Though the official campaign to airbrush the Tiananmen Square events out of Chinese history has been successful with most citizens, there are some, of course, who can never forget because their own children died.
One such father, Ya Weilin, apparently exhausted and driven to despair by his failure after nearly a quarter of a century to persuade the government to account for his son?s death, hanged himself 10 days ago. Tiananmen is still claiming victims; 23 years ago they were felled by bullets. Today they succumb to silence.

BEIRUT (AP) ? A video emerged Friday showing more than a dozen bloodied corpses in Syria, some of them piled on top of each other and in military uniforms, in what the government said was a "massacre" by rebels in the northern province of Aleppo.
The circumstances of the killings were not immediately clear. But in the video ? which The Associated Press could not independently verify ? the narrator said the dead were members of the "shabiha," or pro-regime gunmen.
Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said terrorist groups had killed and mutilated at least 25 people in Daret Azzeh, a rebel-held area in the Aleppo countryside. The government refers to rebels as terrorists.
"The terrorist groups in Daret Azzeh committed a brutal massacre against the citizens, whom they had kidnapped earlier in the day," SANA said.
The report said at least 25 people were killed, but others were missing.
It was not clear whether the men were killed execution-style or died in clashes. An activist in the area, Mohammed Saeed, said rebels regularly collect the bodies of the dead from the government side and dump them by the side of the road so troops can come and collect them later.
Both sides in the conflict have become increasingly militarized as the country veers toward civil war and an internationally brokered peace plan has failed to take hold. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March last year.
The city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, has been relatively quiet, but towns and villages around it have witnessed intense clashes between troops and opposition fighters. Daret Azzeh has endured intense government shelling over the past two weeks as Assad's forces try to regain areas taken by rebels. The violence continued Friday, as Syrian troops shelled the area and used helicopter gunships in their attacks on rebels, Saeed said.
"The army has been trying to push through for days without success," Saeed said.
Government troops have been launching a major offensive on many areas throughout the country over the past two weeks in an attempt to regain ground captured by the opposition. Attacks have mostly concentrated on Aleppo, the suburbs of the capital Damascus as well as the central province of Homs, southern region of Daraa and the eastern city of Deir el-Zour.
On Friday, activists reported that thousands of people rallied to protest the regime following afternoon prayers in different parts of Syria, including Daraa, Aleppo, the northeastern region of Hassakeh and Damascus. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops opened fire at protesters in Aleppo and the Damascus neighborhood of Mazzeh. Several casualties were reported.
The uprising in Syria began with regular anti-regime protests, although they have lost momentum as the revolt turns into an armed insurgency.
Also Friday, the Observatory said four senior army officers have defected from the regime. The group provided a video purporting to show two brigadier generals and two colonels who declared they were joining the opposition.
The group said the defections came Thursday ? the same day a Syria fighter pilot flew his MiG-21 warplane to neighboring Jordan, where he was given asylum.
Thousands of soldiers have abandoned the regime, but most are low-level conscripts. The Free Syria Army, the loosely linked group of rebel forces, is made up largely of defectors.

Sources tell NBC News that prosecutors warned the defense if they put Jerry Sandusky on the stand, his adopted son was prepared to provide damaging testimony as a surprise rebuttal witness. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.
By Michael Isikoff, Hannah Rappleye and Tom Winter, NBC News
Updated at 5:58 p.m. ET: BELLEFONTE, Pa. ? Jerry Sandusky decided not to testify in his child sex abuse trial after his lawyers were warned that prosecutors would call a surprise new witness ? one of the defendant?s own adopted sons, sources told NBC News. The man's lawyers said he?was prepared to testify that his father had abused him.
Matt Sandusky, one of six adopted children of Jerry and Dottie Sandusky, was observed by NBC News entering the courthouse, accompanied by Pennsylvania state troopers, on Wednesday morning as the defense was preparing to wrap up its case ? and apparently still wrestling with whether Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State defensive coordinator, would take the stand.
Matt Sandusky, 33, has been a stalwart supporter of his father, visiting him at his home after he was charged with sex abuse and showing up at the courtroom last week to sit with his mother and other family members. But after the trial began, according to the sources, Matt Sandusky contacted prosecutors and agreed to provide testimony about events that he witnessed.
The jurors in the sexual abuse trial began their deliberations Thursday after hearing vastly different portrayals of the former Penn State assistant football coach. NBC's Michael Isikoff reports.

NBC News was unable to locate him this week for comment. But his attorneys, Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici, confirmed that Matt Sandusky requested their assistance in arranging a meeting with prosecutors "to disclose for the first time in this case that he is a victim of Jerry Sandusky's abuse."
Shubin and Andronucci said in a statement that they would have no further comment.
"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," they said.
Prosecutors contacted Sandusky?s defense lawyers in the last few days to inform them that Matt Sandusky might be called as a rebuttal witness if Sandusky testified in his own defense ? news that alarmed the defense team and introduced a new wild card into their intense discussions about whether he should do so, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
A source close to Jerry Sandusky told NBC News that "there was no one factor that led to the decision" not to have him testify Wednesday. Sandusky's lawyers were also known to be concerned that the defendant would be grilled on cross examination about apparently incriminating statements he made to NBC's Bob Costas in the "Rock Center with Brian Williams" show last November, including unaired portions that were played on the "Today" show for the first time this week. Defense lawyers also believed they had made some headway chipping away at the prosecution case this week, especially by playing a tape showing that police investigators may have coached Sandusky's alleged victims by telling them what other witnesses were saying about him.
The drama over whether Sandusky would take the stand continued to play out in court on Wednesday as defense lawyers were finishing their case. During a court recess in the morning, Sandusky's lawyers motioned Sandusky to enter a side room for a conference. They then joined prosecutors for a second conference behind closed doors meeting in Judge John Cleland's chambers. About 30 minutes later, Sandusky re-entered the courtroom, looking somber and chastened. At that point, Sandusky's lawyer rose and announced, "The defense rests."
TODAY's Savannah Guthrie discusses why the prosecution didn't call Jerry Sandusky's adopted son as a witness if he was able to provide damaging evidence.
Matt Sandusky first met his father at his Second Mile charity when he was 10 years old. He later went to live in the Sandusky home after he set fire to a barn in 1995. A judge approved the Sanduskys as foster parents for Matt and he was formally adopted by the couple when he was 18.
Matt Sandusky has been named during testimony in the trial. During the first day of testimony, one of the alleged victims ?listed in the grand jury report as "Victim 4" ? testified that Matt Sandusky seemed "nervous" when, after they played racketball with Jerry Sandusky, the three showered together and Jerry Sandusky then began throwing soap at him, "Victim 4" testified.
"At that point, Matt got up and left," he testified. "Well, not got up, but turned off the shower, went out and into another shower."

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) ? The human brain can recognize thousands of different objects, but neuroscientists have long grappled with how the brain organizes object representation; in other words, how the brain perceives and identifies different objects. Now researchers at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences have discovered that the brain organizes objects based on their physical size, with a specific region of the brain reserved for recognizing large objects and another reserved for small objects.
Their findings, to be published in the June 21 issue of Neuron, could have major implications for fields like robotics, and could lead to a greater understanding of how the brain organizes and maps information.
"Prior to this study, nobody had looked at whether the size of an object was an important factor in the brain's ability to recognize it," said Aude Oliva, an associate professor in the MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and senior author of the study.
"It's almost obvious that all objects in the world have a physical size, but the importance of this factor is surprisingly easy to miss when you study objects by looking at pictures of them on a computer screen," said Dr. Talia Konkle, lead author of the paper. "We pick up small things with our fingers, we use big objects to support our bodies. How we interact with objects in the world is deeply and intrinsically tied to their real-world size, and this matters for how our brain's visual system organizes object information."
As part of their study, Konkle and Oliva took 3D scans of brain activity during experiments in which participants were asked to look at images of big and small objects or visualize items of differing size. By evaluating the scans, the researchers found that there are distinct regions of the brain that respond to big objects (for example, a chair or a table), and small objects (for example, a paperclip or a strawberry).
By looking at the arrangement of the responses, they found a systematic organization of big to small object responses across the brain's cerebral cortex. Large objects, they learned, are processed in the parahippocampal region of the brain, an area located by the hippocampus, which is also responsible for navigating through spaces and for processing the location of different places, like the beach or a building. Small objects are handled in the inferior temporal region of the brain, near regions that are active when the brain has to manipulate tools like a hammer or a screwdriver.
The work could have major implications for the field of robotics, in particular in developing techniques for how robots deal with different objects, from grasping a pen to sitting in a chair.
"Our findings shed light on the geography of the human brain, and could provide insight into developing better machine interfaces for robots," said Oliva.
Many computer vision techniques currently focus on identifying what an object is without much guidance about the size of the object, which could be useful in recognition. "Paying attention to the physical size of objects may dramatically constrain the number of objects a robot has to consider when trying to identify what it is seeing," said Oliva.
The study's findings are also important for understanding how the organization of the brain may have evolved. The work of Konkle and Oliva suggests that the human visual system's method for organizing thousands of objects may also be tied to human interactions with the world. "If experience in the world has shaped our brain organization over time, and our behavior depends on how big objects are, it makes sense that the brain may have established different processing channels for different actions, and at the center of these may be size," said Konkle.
Oliva, a cognitive neuroscientist by training, has focused much of her research on how the brain tackles scene and object recognition, as well as visual memory. Her ultimate goal is to gain a better understanding of the brain's visual processes, paving the way for the development of machines and interfaces that can see and understand the visual world like humans do.
"Ultimately, we want to focus on how active observers move in the natural world. We think this not only matters for large-scale brain organization of the visual system, but it also matters for making machines that can see like us," said Konkle and Oliva.
This research was funded by a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, and a National Eye Institute grant, and was conducted at the Athinoula A. Martinos Imaging Center at McGovern Institute for Brain Research, MIT.

RIO DE JANEIRO?? Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff welcomed world leaders to a rainy Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday under a cloud of criticism that a three-day summit is falling far short of its promise to establish clear goals for sustainable development.
Only on msnbc.com
Before the official start of the event, known as Rio+20 because of the landmark Earth Summit in the city two decades ago, Brazil convinced visiting delegations to finalize a draft declaration for their leaders. But many delegations and summit organizers - as well as outraged environmentalists and activist groups - are lambasting the document as weak.
"Let me be frank: Our efforts have not lived up to the measure of the challenge," said Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary general in opening remarks. "Nature does not wait," he added later. "Nature does not negotiate with human beings."
The draft document, finalized on Tuesday, laid out aspirations, rather than mandatory goals, on issues like food security, water, and energy. It also called for countries to pursue so-called "sustainable development goals," a vague set of U.N. objectives built around the environment, economic growth, and social inclusion.
Many of those who agreed upon the draft, however, say it was stripped of vital specifics. "I was disappointed that we did not go further," said Nick Clegg, Britain's deputy prime minister, in prepared comments on Wednesday.
Expectations have long been low for the gathering, which is expected to include nearly 100 heads of state and government by the time it concludes on Friday. Many leaders at present are more focused on the global economic slowdown and the debt crisis in Europe.
Slideshow: Brazil?s balancing act (on this page)Despite the presence of the president of France and the Russian and Chinese prime ministers, several other high-profile leaders are missing, including U.S. President Barack Obama and Germany's Angela Merkel.
Compared with the original Earth Summit, which led to historic decisions on biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions, organizers say this summit is only the beginning of a new goal-setting process for global development. The 1992 event, they point out, was the culmination of years of prior negotiations.
Rio authorities, gearing up to host the World Cup and Olympics later this decade, have been working to put a friendly face on the gathering. The city's famous Christ the Redeemer statue is illuminated green, its glow shining nightly on epic traffic jams and motorcades below.
Demonstrators, meantime, have made their displeasure known.
Brazil's plans for 60 Amazon dams spills over to summit
Will world make good on 'broken promises' at Earth Summit
Outside the summit, a gargantuan series of warehouse-like conference halls in the strip mall-filled suburbs of southern Rio, environmental activists, political parties, and others marched through steady drizzle and called for bold action.
Earlier this week, bare-breasted feminists marched through the city center and Amazonian tribesmen, donning war paint and arrows, descended upon Brazil's national development bank, which is financing dams and other controversial infrastructure projects in the Amazon rainforest.
Diplomats said Brazil's push for a draft document had opposing outcomes. While it forced delegations to focus and come to an agreement, it may have prematurely shut the door on bolder action by leaders when they arrive.
That, they added, leaves little leeway for the draft to improve before a final pronouncement on Friday. "Everybody has things that they have given up in the document in one way or the other," said Todd Stern, U.S. special envoy on climate change. "This is the thread that once you start pulling on it, it unravels quickly."

Rapper talks to MTV News about working on Believe ahead of 'Bieber Live' at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rob Markman
When Justin Bieber enlisted Big Sean for his Believe track "As Long As You Love Me," the 24-year-old MC didn't clean up his NSFW act. Instead, Sean found a new way to express his more mature lyrics to the Bieber crowd.
"Bieber's a true G. People may not know that," Big Sean said recently. "Nah, but he is a good dude, man. And I ain't toning down nothing — I'm diverse, I can write raps to any type of song."
Sean also revealed to MTV News that on the same day he was recruited to work with the pop star, the rapper got a call from another artist — one who exists on the polar opposite end of the musical spectrum — also wanting to work with him.
"It's crazy! I got a call from Gucci Mane the same day I got a call from Bieber and his people to do two different projects," Big Sean recalled. "It's tight that I can be a person that's so diverse that I can do both of those and it's not reaching. I'm still me ... and I didn't compromise anything for Bieber. You know, I just didn't curse, which is easy. I don't have to curse every day."
Of course, the Bieber/Sean collaboration is definitely more in Justin territory thanks to a pulsing dance beat, courtesy of producer Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. The pair go back and forth about that special girl over some fist-pumping beats.
But Sean is hardly the only rapper who's giving Believe the co-sign: Drake, Ludacris and Nicki Minaj all make cameos on the release, out on Tuesday (June 19). When we spoke to Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, he told us the singer worked hard to make sure the cameos fit perfectly.
"[Justin] and I are both very competitive, and he'd always look at me and go, 'This is the make-it-or-break-it album, and you got to push me. You got to tell me if I'm not good enough, and I might argue' ... so I really, really pushed him, and we took this album really seriously," Braun said. (Bieber will talk all about the making of the album tonight on "Bieber Live," set to air at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!)
"But I also had to give it room to grow," he added. "Sometimes I'd put him in writing sessions for two weeks, and we'd get one song out of it, and it was just because he had to find that place for himself and that music. And as the process went on, he really started hitting his stride. ... And I think everyone has a different favorite, but the one common thread is you don't dislike any songs."
Don't miss "Bieber Live" tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!

A man in Jeddah reads a newspaper on Sunday with an article about Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz's death as the country prepared to bury the former heir to the throne.
By msnbc.com staff and news services
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- As Saudi Arabia prepared to bury its former crown prince in Mecca on Sunday, questions swirled about how the world's largest oil producer would pass the baton to a younger generation of leaders. ?
Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul-Aziz's death on Saturday meant that for the second time in less than 12 months the important U.S. ally has to choose a successor to 88-year-old King Abdullah.?
Unlike in European monarchies, the Saudi succession does not pass from father to eldest son, but has moved along a line of brothers born to Abdul-Aziz bin Saud. A previous crown prince, Sultan, died last October. ?The likely candidate is Prince Salman, 76.?
'Powerful conservative force': Saudi Arabia's next in line to throne dies
"There will be a meeting where the next crown prince will be decided. If you take a historical perspective it has always been done in an orderly and organized manner. Prince Salman fits the profile in many ways," said Khaled Almaeena, editor in chief of the Saudi Gazette.?
The appointment of a new crown prince is not likely to change the kingdom's position on foreign or domestic policy, but King Abdullah's new heir will face a range of major challenges when he one day becomes king.
Salman, who is seen as a pragmatist with a strong grasp of the intricate balance of competing princely and clerical interests that dominate Saudi politics, was named defense minister last year.?
Saudi prince Alwaleed's deal for Twitter is not a traditional investment, says Dan Primack, senior editor at Fortune Magazine.
Saudi Arabia-Bahrain union plan set to inflame tensions with Iran?
Salman is the current defense minister and was?governor of Riyadh, the country's capital, for more than four decades.
Analysts believe he shares many of Nayef's conservative views and is unlikely to challenge the religious establishment if made king. But he also has played more of a mediator role in Saudi politics while in charge of Riyadh.?
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will allow women to vote and run for public office at the next election cycle in 2015. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.
"There has been an impression that Nayef is more conservative because he was the guy dealing with threats and terrorism as interior minister and Salman was meeting with businessman and intellectuals as governor of Riyadh," said Sami al-Faraj, director of the Kuwait Center for Strategic Studies.?
"The reality is there is very little difference. Both are conservative and won't rock the boat," he added. "Nayef was just a behind-the-scenes guy and Salman is more public. One was implicit; the other explicit."?
But it is unclear whether Nayef's death will bring about the shift to put a younger member of the royal family in a traditional role as No. 3 in line for the throne. Among the possible contenders mentioned include King Abdullah's son Mitab, the head of the National Guard, and Nayef's son Mohammad, a senior official in the interior ministry.

Grooming a next generation as potential rulers would mark an important shift in Saudi affairs by acknowledging that the country is moving toward a new era under the stewardship of a group raised with deeper Western connections and understandings.?
"The house of Saud will need to think about what would happen in the event the king became unwell, and there is no way on earth you would hand the crown prince role to a grandson in 48 hours time. You have to find an older prince," said Michael Stephens, researcher at the Royal United Services Institute think-tank in Qatar.?
Whoever takes the helm in the coming years, Saudi Arabia will have to grapple with Tehran's regional ambitions as well as its nuclear program. Iran insists it does not seek nuclear weapons, but Saudi officials and their Western allies fear the country could develop an arsenal and significantly shift the balance of power in the region. One possible outcome could be a regional nuclear arms race with Saudi Arabia also seeking atomic weapons.?
Saudi Arabia is also facing Arab Spring-inspired internal pressures for political reforms and greater openness. King Abdullah has pledged billions of dollars to create more state jobs and offer other government-backed programs to try to appease calls for change.?
Neighboring Bahrain, meanwhile, has become a central issue for Saudi Arabia since a Shiite-led uprising last year against the ruling Sunni monarchy. Saudi forces led a Gulf military intervention to help prop up the dynasty in the strategic island nation, which is home to the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet. Saudi Arabia is now leading efforts for closer union with the country that would effectively unify key policies such as security and foreign relations. More than 50 people have died in Bahrain's unrest since February 2011.?
