Finding smarter ways to be green can be made easier by using a little device already found in the pockets of millions of people -- smartphones.
According to Pew Research Center, 56 percent of American adults now own some type of smartphone. Apple and Google recently hit 50 billion app downloads at both the App Store and Google Play, respectively. Nearly every type of app is available on both of these platforms, including green apps.
An app called Joulebug turns conservation into a game. Players can earn points and badges for recycling or reusing shopping bags or coffee cups -- reinforcing the movement to reduce, reuse and recycle.
In 2012, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy launched the Green Button initiative to help Americans track their energy usage. The idea being that if Americans could track their utility bills with easy-to-understand data, it could help them adjust their energy use and save money.
Those who want to drill down and monitor how much energy they're using can try apps like Kill-Ur-Watts or Leafully, which connect to Green Button data.
Leafully won the energy department's Apps for Energy contest in 2012 -- and works by connecting to green button data offered by companies, like Pacific Gas and Electric.
An app called WattRebate will let users search by zip code to find loans or tax rebates for becoming more energy efficient by state. It culls data from thousands of utilities, regional agencies and private companies to provide a local rewards that can be used by residents, contractors and architects.
Riding a bicycle is one health-conscious way to cut back on gas usage. Places like New York City, Chicago and Washington D.C. offer bike-sharing programs that let residents pick up and drop off a bike around town.
An app called Ride the City provides information like routes, local shops, bike-share stations and local weather.
Being green isn't easy, but hopefully these apps will make it fun.

Dr K Chiranjeevi, Minister of State with Independent Charge for Tourism, Government of India, has urged state governments and Union Territories (UT) to instate the cadre of tourist police in one form or other. Speaking at the conference on of state tourism ministers and tourism secretaries in New Delhi recently, he said, "This can be done either by borrowing some companies from the police department or hiring ex?servicemen or home guards. Tourist police can be deployed visibly in places where such incidents can happen." Referring to the recent incidents of assault on women tourists which has seriously damaged our image the minister said, "It is not only important that we provide security to the tourists but it is also important that we must instil a sense of confidence in them." ...

On their blog the Unity3D team has announced the arrival of Unity 4.2, which bring support for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
The Unity Engine is very widely used on a variety of platforms, and makes it easy for developers to create 3D games.
Microsoft has created a strategic alliance with the company, meaning developers will be able to publish their game to the Windows Store without having to pay the Pro fee.
The arrival of the toolset will mean it will be even easier for developers to port their application to Windows Phone. The Windows Phone Store already contains titles like Drift Mania created with the platform.
?
Microsoft and Unity are also running a contest with over $100,000 in prizes for developers creating original games for Windows Phone or Windows 8 using the tools.
The terms and conditions of the contest can be read here.

10 Hidden Benefits of Windows 8.1
(click image for larger view) On Thursday, Microsoft announced earnings that missed Wall Street estimates by the largest margin in a decade. Windows 8 and Microsoft's Surface tablet headlined the disappointing earnings, which prompted CFO Amy Hood to remark, "We have to do better."Indeed, Microsoft needs to do better and customers need to see the evidence sooner than later.
Hood said the process will take time, but with Windows 8, the company might not be in position to be patient. If the company's recently announced restructuring doesn't start paying off within the next several months, the obstacles standing between CEO Steve Ballmer and his "one Microsoft" vision will only grow taller, and in some cases, become insurmountable.
Ballmer wants Microsoft to be more collaborative, and to produce products that enhance one another. This kind of cross-divisional cooperation is something with which the company has so far had mixed success.
[ Need Windows 8 apps? Read 8 Free, Must-Have Windows 8 Apps. ]
Azure and Office 365 have reinforced one another, for instance, but Microsoft has struggled to use Office to promote Windows 8. The company has declined to release Office for the iPad in an attempt to make Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets more attractive, but so far, only niche users have embraced the Modern UI. Apple, meanwhile, continues to sell millions of iPads.
In a Friday blog post, Forrest analyst J.P. Gownder noted that if only 10% of iPad users are willing to pay $100 for Office, Microsoft would book $1.4 billion in revenue, more than enough to wipe away the massive Surface write-down that the company reported on Thursday. As the unsold Surface inventory attests, Microsoft seems to have overestimated consumer demand for tablets that run Office.
Perhaps once Windows 8.1 hits, that demand will solidify, but in the meantime, Microsoft's strategy is not working.
Microsoft is committed to the Modern UI as the core of its future, so it's not surprising the company is willing to take short-term losses in the pursuit of long-term gains. But there's always a tipping point. Microsoft isn't there yet, but if Windows 8 doesn't start performing, especially with consumers, Ballmer will be forced to compromise his plan.
Microsoft is not on the brink of disaster. The company continues to own the enterprise market, and several of its fledgling projects should prolong that dominance for years to come. The reorg could potentially help these newer projects along.
Bing has lost billions, for instance, but its potential as a development platform is fascinating and far-reaching. Ballmer talks about Windows apps that understand a user's context and needs, and with Bing's intelligence and Internet-spanning reach riding along Azure's backbone, developers might be able to create this vision.
Though this sounds great, certain portions of the market, namely consumers, aren't going to wait around for Microsoft's next-gen apps to materialize. If Microsoft finally has a compelling mass market product by the fall, that will be one thing. But if the company is 12 or 18 months away from being truly competitive, that's another story. Microsoft is already playing from behind, and at some point, the deficit will become almost impossible to surmount, barring a genuinely disruptive new product or a major misstep from Apple or Google.
Following Thursday's earnings report, Microsoft value shed $32 billion. The 11% decline represents the biggest single-day sell-off of Microsoft stock in more than a decade. Steve Ballmer is accustomed to stockholders treating him like a punching bag, of course. But what if Windows 8 is still in disarray after the holiday season? What if businesses that use Windows XP users don't accelerate their migrations? What if most of these businesses stick with Windows 7, leaving Microsoft without a strong presence in the enterprise tablet market?

Thousands of criminals, including murderers, paedophiles and rapists, have been caught trying to get jobs in Britain?s schools, an investigation by The Independent on Sunday has revealed.
Routine criminal checks on would-be teachers and candidates for other posts including caretakers, cleaners and dinner ladies have identified almost 200,000 separate convictions in the past three years.
Details obtained from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) show that three murderers applied for jobs as caretakers and cleaners at UK schools in 2011 and 2012. The catalogue of offences also includes nine people convicted of manslaughter, six rapists and almost a dozen guilty of sexual offences against children.
Government departments insist that the current rules prevent serious offenders from getting jobs in Britain?s schools, hospitals or care homes. But the huge list of convictions, which runs to more than 1,000 separate categories, is dominated by non-violent offences including shoplifting, reawakening concerns that offenders are being unfairly discriminated against.
Home Office lawyers are asking the Supreme Court justices to overturn an Appeal Court ruling that the records disclosure system violated the rights of some people who argue that convictions or cautions should be kept secret.
Dominic Headley of the resettlement charity Nacro said: ?There?s no denying that ex-offenders have a stigma attached to them. Offenders are eight times more likely to be unemployed than other people and it?s critical that we work to address this.?

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - At least seven people were injured by an explosion after an attempt to illegally tap a pipeline belonging to the Mexican state oil monopoly Pemex near Mexico City, officials said on Sunday.
The early morning blast at the crude oil pipeline occurred in Tonanitla about 40 km (25 miles) north of the capital, and was now under control, Pemex said on its Twitter account.
The government of the state of Mexico, a populous region that borders much of the capital, said seven people were injured by the explosion. Five were police and two worked for the fire brigade. It was not known who caused the blast.
Pipeline taps are a frequent menace to Pemex, which loses hundreds of millions of dollars a year to oil theft.
A symbol of Mexican self-sufficiency, Pemex is struggling to reverse a drop in production, which has fallen to about 2.5 million barrels per day from a peak of 3.4 million in 2004.
The government is due to unveil a plan to open up the company to more private capital by early September.

SAINT-AMAND-MONTROND, France (AP) ? Mark Cavendish won the 13th stage of the Tour de France in a sprint finish Friday and Chris Froome lost a sizeable chunk of his overall lead after being caught by Alberto Contador.
Cavendish moved ahead with about 100 meters to go and rival Peter Sagan, the defending champion and current leader in the sprinters' green jersey contest, was unable to stay with him.
It was the British sprinter's second stage win of the Tour and 25th overall ? moving him into third place with Frenchman Andre Leducq on the all-time list of Tour stage winners.
"My team did an incredible job today," Cavendish said. "We're going to have some Champagne tonight."
His relief was clear to see as he rushed into the arms of teammate Sylvain Chavanel after the stage. On Thursday his teammates had put him into a great position to attack but he was beaten to the line by Marcel Kittel of Germany.
"Yesterday they gave everything and I let them down," Cavendish said. "The Tour de France is the most incredible race in the world. It means so much to me. When I think about it, it makes me want to cry."
Flat stages are normally relatively free of incident, but the 173-kilometer (107.5-mile) trek from Tours, which is surrounded by the Loire river, to Saint-Amand-Montrond in central France was exciting and showed that even Froome's formidable Sky team can be vulnerable.
"There's no such thing as a calm stage on the Tour de France," Froome said.
With about a third of the stage gone, the main pack was split into three and Alejandro Valverde dropped way out of overall contention after stopping to repair a puncture. He dropped out of the top 10 after losing a huge amount of time.
Valverde was second overnight but that spot was overtaken by Dutchman Bauke Mollema, while the two-time former champion Contador improved to third. They both gained 1 minute, 9 seconds on Froome.
That means Mollema is 2:28 behind and Contador is 2:45 back.
"It doesn't surprise me what happened today. Just a reminder that I need to stay awake at all times in this race," Froome said.
Cavendish now has only Frenchman Bernard Hinault ? 28 wins ? and record holder Eddy Merckx of Belgium ? 34 ? ahead of him.
Elsewhere, there was a victory of sorts for Contador ? who had been battered by Froome in the Pyrenees mountains and then lost more time to him in the time trial.
That should give Contador a huge lift with a tough mountain stage looming on Sunday and then three grueling Alpine stages to follow after that. Given that Froome finished all alone and without any Sky teammates on a flat stage, it suggests he could be in serious trouble in the mountains if he's isolated by an attack from Contador.
The Sky team is down to seven riders after Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen had to pull out after fracturing his right shoulder in a crash involving about 20 riders near the end of Thursday's stage. Of the remaining seven, Geraint Thomas is riding with a fractured pelvis.
With about 60 kilometers of the stage gone, the peloton split in three after an attack from Cavendish's Omega Pharma QuickStep team, with Tony Martin leading the charge. Froome made sure he stayed with the small group forming at the front as it pulled away from the two groups behind.
Omega's attack was to try and distance German sprinter Marcel Kittel ? who was won three sprint stages so far ? and it worked to perfection.
"They rode themselves into the ground," Cavendish said. "It wasn't really a master plan, we just felt the wind wasn't in the right position so we decided to ride harder, to make the peloton more tired and finally it broke."
With so many riders pedaling hard behind them, there was no way the early six-man breakaway would last and they were swallowed up with about 100 kilometers (roughly 60 miles) left. No breakaway has gone all the way on this year's Tour, mainly because the peloton has ridden so aggressively, which in turn made the race more nervy and doubtless contributed to several big crashes.
Then, bad luck struck Valverde.
The Spaniard had to leave the yellow jersey group to mend his bike. This meant that his Movistar teammates also had to drop off the main group to go back and help him with nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) of grueling riding ahead.
Flanked by five teammates, Valverde rode furiously but it was a futile effort.
With Valverde vulnerable, the Belkin team showed no mercy, profiting from his delay to move to the front of the yellow jersey group, keen to gain as much time as possible in order to push Mollema and countryman Laurens Ten Dam, who is now fifth, up the overall standings.
Things like that tend to go full circle in cycling, and Belkin can no longer expect any help from Movistar for the rest of the race.
Belkin pushed so hard at the front that Richie Porte, Froome's strongest teammate at Sky, was dropped.
By the end, Froome was all alone and his team has some serious thinking to do with the mountains approaching.

"This is a threshold issue," Rove said Thursday on Fox News' "The O'Reilly Factor."
"And if Republicans don't get past it, we may end up seeing the Latino vote go the way of the African-American vote. And that is totally in the Democratic column."
Latest: Do You Support Giving Illegals Citizenship? Vote Here Now
Winning the Hispanic vote isn't the only thing Republicans need to do to capture the White House in 2016, Rove said, but it is one crucial component. Public perception is changing, he said, even among Republicans.
GOP candidates are able to get significant numbers of Hispanic voters in statewide elections in Texas, Rove noted. And George W. Bush got 44 percent of the Latino vote nationwide in 2004.
"Mitt Romney in Ohio got 42 percent of the Latino vote when he got past the issue of 'Send them all home,' and got on to the economic message," Rove said.
House Republicans have said they don't want to pass the comprehensive immigration bill passed by the Senate in June, preferring to tackle individual issues, such as border security, in separate bills. House Speaker John Boehner earlier Thursday told fellow Republicans that the immigration system "needs to be fixed and Republicans ought to be part of the solution."

The U.S. government posted an unexpectedly large budget surplus in June, a further sign of the rapid improvement in public finances that has taken the heat off Congress to find savings and raise the nation's borrowing limit.
Rising tax revenue, public spending cuts and big payments to the Treasury from government-backed mortgage companies helped the government take in $117 billion more last month than it paid out, the U.S. Treasury said on Thursday.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a surplus of $39.5 billion.
June's surplus was the largest on record for that month.
While the government is still $510 billion in the red with three months to go in the fiscal year, June's big surplus will buy it time before it runs up against the limit on borrowing set by Congress. Analysts expect the Treasury to hit the debt ceiling by early November.
The surplus in June also highlighted how much an improving economy and existing legislation have helped improve the fiscal outlook. That has made overhauling public pension and healthcare systems a little less pressing.
Rising incomes and tax increases enacted earlier in the year helped cause government receipts to rise to $287 billion in June, up 10 percent from a year earlier. While economic growth has been lackluster in the first half of 2013, job growth has been more steady. In June, 195,000 jobs were added to the nation's non-farm payrolls.
Across-the-board budget cuts that began in March also contributed to the surplus.
Gross outlays at the Department of Defense and for military programs, for example, are down about 7 percent in the fiscal year to date from the same period a year earlier. The current fiscal year began last October.
Government-backed mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac , which were bailed out by taxpayers during the financial crisis but have since returned to profitability, also helped drive June's surplus by pouring billion of dollars into public coffers.
Fannie Mae, which said in May it would return $59 billion to the Treasury in quarterly dividends, provided most of the funds. The big dividend payment reflected an extraordinary gain from the reversal of a tax-related writedown.

LOS ANGELES ? Jon Hamm is going from a presenter to host of the ESPY Awards, a natural segue for the former three-sport prep athlete who is unabashed in his love for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals.
Hamm called himself a "pretty good" high school player, but is quick to note he was never a threat to make it in the professional ranks.
That's why the 42-year-old actor best known as Don Draper on AMC's "Mad Men" wants to keep the focus on the athletes when he hosts the annual show honoring the year's best sports moments. It airs live on ESPN on July 17 from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
"When you look at someone else who is excellent at what they do, you can't help but be jealous," Hamm said Thursday. "When you look at what David Freese did in the 2011 World Series, that's performance at the highest level with all the chips on the table."
Freese had two key hits in the late innings of Game 6 against Texas that year, helping the Cardinals force a Game 7, which they won.
"I don't want to disrespect any Blues fans, but the Cardinals are No. 1 in my heart," he said, adding that the Cardinals and NHL's Blues are "1 and 1-A" in his rooting order.
At John Burroughs High in suburban St. Louis, Hamm was on the football, baseball and swimming teams, lettering in all three sports.
"I loved it. A lot of those guys I played on those teams with I'm still pretty good friends with," he said. "It's important for young kids to get out there and move around, especially in the kind of high-fructose environment we have these days."
Hamm is hosting the ESPYs just as he wraps filming on the Disney movie "The Million Dollar Arm," in which he plays a sports agent.
Hosting an awards show is not like hosting "Saturday Night Live," he noted. "But I've never had a problem standing up in front of people making a fool of myself, and I'm sure that will happen at least once during the telecast."
As someone who's been nominated for his share of acting trophies, Hamm knows what it's like to sit in the audience for an awards show.
"You kind of want it to go fast because there's fun parties afterwards," he said, noting that the best hosts "always kind of keep it moving, keep it light, and give you some laughs."
Among the scheduled presenters are LeBron James, Ben Affleck, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Selena Gomez, Danica Patrick, Maria Sharapova, Jason Sudeikis, and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen.

YARNELL, Ariz. ? A fire information officer says 19 firefighters are unaccounted for while battling the Yarnell Hill Fire.
Mike Reichling told the Arizona Republic ( ) that 20 firefighters were involved in a "serious incident." http://bit.ly/158NjWp
The newspaper reports that one of the firefighters has been located.
The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office has notified residents in the Peeples Valley area and in the town of Yarnell to evacuate.
Earlier, the fast-moving fire prompted evacuations of 50 homes in the Buckhorn, Model Creek and Double A Bar Ranch areas about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix.
The Red Cross said opened a shelter at Yavapai College in Prescott.
The Yarnell Hill Fire now covers nearly 2,000 acres, according to the newspaper.
The fire started Friday but picked up momentum Sunday as the area experienced high temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
A fast-moving wildfire burning in a central Arizona community has led the evacuation of at least 50 homes that are threatened by the blaze, and by Sunday afternoon, authorities had asked even more residents to leave.
The wildfire also forced the closure of about 15 miles of state Route 89, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced. The department did not have an estimate of how long the closure would last but advised drivers to use U.S. 93 or Interstate 17 as alternate routes.
Fire information officer Mike Reichling said earlier Sunday that no homes had been lost in the fire northwest of the Yavapai County community of Yarnell.
Early estimates put the number of evacuated homes at 120, but the number was downgraded by officials closer to the fire.
Reichling says the blaze was within a mile of some homes but was burning away from them.
The Yarnell Hill Fire prompted evacuations in the Model Creek, Buckhorn and Double A Bar Ranch areas about 85 miles northwest of Phoenix. The blaze also was within 200 yards of the Model Creek School.
Crews cleared brush and did other work around the evacuated homes to help guard against the fire.
On Sunday afternoon, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office called residents in the Peeples Valley area and in the town of Yarnell, telling them to evacuate.
The wildfire started Friday and picked up momentum Sunday, covering 300 acres, as the area experienced high temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions.
Two hundred firefighters are now working at the fire, but an additional 130 firefighters and more water- and retardant-dropping helicopters and aircraft are on their way.
The Sheriff's Office said the Red Cross has opened a shelter at Yavapai College in Prescott.
In another Arizona fire, a 2-acre blaze that started at a motorcycle salvage yard and spread to a trailer park has destroyed five mobile homes in the Gila County community of Rye, located more than 130 miles east of Yarnell.
Gila County Health and Emergency Services Director Michael O'Driscoll said no one was injured in Rye.
The fire was ignited Saturday night at All Bikes Sales located off Highway 87. It spread to neighboring federal Forest Service land but was fully contained within 12 hours of its start.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Seven adults and two children were staying at a shelter set up for people who were evacuated, the Red Cross said.

FORT WAYNE, Indiana ? A northeast Indiana group that supports a high-speed rail connection between Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, says a feasibility study shows the service with stops in Fort Wayne and Warsaw could create more than 26,000 full-time jobs.
The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/11QG6JP ) that the Maryland consulting firm Transportation Economics & Management Systems Inc. estimates that $700 million of additional household income would be generated each year across the 11-city corridor if the route, which is expected to cost $1.6 billion, is built.
The $80,000 feasibility study was paid for with money raised by the Northeast Indiana Passenger Rail Association. The proposed system would operate 12 trains each way per day
