Apple's Jony Ive refutes 'godlessness' of mass-produced gadgets

Apple's senior vice president of industrial design, Sir?Jonathan Ive, defended our gadget-obsessed natures during a recent speech. There's nothing inherently godless about making products in volume, he explained.

As Wired UK's Olivia Solon reported,?Ive gave the speech during the British Embassy's Creative Summit. He talked a lot about how Apple doesn't focus on making money, but on building good products. (The money will come as long as the products are solid and the company is "operationally?competent," he says.)

The trick to getting?things just right, Ive explained while dismissing Augustus Pugin ??an artist who famously rallied against mass production ??is to "invest an incredible amount of care into each [product]."

"You can make one chair carelessly, thoughtlessly, that is valueless. Or you can make a phone [that will eventually go on to be mass produced] and invest so many years of care and have so many people so driven to make the very best phone way beyond any sort of functional imperative that there is incredible value," Ive elaborated, according to Wired UK.

Folks who've been following iPhone rumors from the very start?? when the gadget was barely a twinkle in every tech reporter's eye?? likely smiled as they read those words. ZTE Flash for Sprint leaked with 4.5-inch screen and LTE

Hot on the heels of the recently released Grand X, it looks like ZTE is pairing up with Sprint to launch a new LTE handset, the Flash. As far as specs, it seems to tick all the boxes: a 4.5" 720x1280 display, dual-core 1.5 Ghz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 12.6MP camera. There are just a couple shortcomings at first glance though, mainly the rather small 8GB of storage and 1780 mAh battery, which don't compare favorably to recent top tier handsets like the Evo 4G LTE and Galaxy SIII.

We'll only know for sure when Sprint drops the official release date and pricing on this one. It could be a real contender, and more high-end device competition can only be a good thing.

Radical cleric to launch new bid for release in UK

LONDON (AP) ? Radical Islamist cleric Abu Qatada is launching a new legal bid at Britain's High Court for release from detention.

Britain has been trying for years to deport Abu Qatada, a Palestinian-Jordanian preacher described in both Spanish and British courts as a leading al-Qaida figure in Europe and a threat to national security.

Abu Qatada is being held in a high-security prison while he fights deportation to Jordan over terror charges. Both the British and Jordanian governments want Abu Qatada to stand trial in Jordan, but he claims he will be tortured if he is deported there.

In May, Britain's Special Immigration Appeals Commission denied bail to Abu Qatada ahead of his deportation appeal in October, saying having him on the streets during the Olympics would be "exceptionally problematic."

On Tuesday, his lawyers will ask High Court judges for permission to challenge his detention. The lawyers are applying for permission to seek judicial review and a writ of habeas corpus freeing him while he fights deportation.

Britain's Home Office has said it will "strongly resist" any attempt to overturn the decision to keep Abu Qatada locked up, calling the latest legal bid "the last desperate attempts of a man who has run out of options."

Abu Qatada, also known as Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman, has fought attempts to expel him from the U.K. since 2001.

He has previously been convicted in absentia in Jordan of terrorist offenses related to two alleged bomb plots in 1999 and 2000, and he will face a retrial if deported from Britain.

BREAKING NEWS: Zack Ryder, Dolph Ziggler and Justin Roberts involved in a car accident in San Diego

SAN DIEGO ? WWE Superstars Zack Ryder, Dolph Ziggler and announcer Justin Roberts were involved in a car accident near downtown San Diego on Friday afternoon just after 5:00 p.m. PT. Traveling in a limousine, the three were rear-ended as they were transported from Comic-Con International at the San Diego Convention Center.

"It was a quiet ride since Dolph and I don?t get along. Then, all of a sudden, the brakes hit and I slid down the couch part of the limo. The driver stopped and the car behind us hit us," Zack Ryder said.

"I landed on the floor and my neck hit the edge of the chair," Ryder added. "Ziggler went flying. Justin went flying. The car hit us full speed; we all got thrown from our seats. My neck is a little sore. That?s it. We?re all OK though."

Local paramedics examined the former United States Champion and his fellow passengers, finding no major injuries, according to Ryder.

"It was a big limo, so we couldn?t tell exactly what was going on outside, but we merged on to a highway and then at one point we braked," Justin Roberts told WWE.com. "Zack basically slid down the bench. Dolph and I were sitting in the back facing forward, and Zack was on the bench sitting sideways. Then, out of nowhere, we got hit pretty hard."

Roberts continued, "You could tell by the way Zack was sitting, that his neck [was hurt], and Dolph was sitting right in front of where the impact was, so he got hit hard.

"I don?t remember what happened with myself," Roberts said. "I just know I was sitting on the floor with my knee up, and I was fine. Then I saw that my leg was bleeding, and it hurt. I don?t know what I hit my knee on."

Roberts explained that his cut was minor and he will have it reevaluated when he sees WWE physicians at the WWE Live Event in Tucson, Ariz., this weekend.

"I don?t think anyone was hurt in an emergency way," he said. "It doesn?t feel good, but we didn?t want to sit around in a hospital in San Diego."

According to Roberts, all three declined going to the hospital; he and Ryder are now traveling by car to Phoenix and Ziggler departed on a flight out of San Diego. Stay with WWE.com as more details become available.

New biofuel process dramatically improves energy recovery, and uses agricultural waste

ScienceDaily (July 10, 2012) ? A new biofuel production process created by Michigan State University researchers produces energy more than 20 times higher than existing methods.

The results, published in the current issue of Environmental Science and Technology, showcase a novel way to use microbes to produce biofuel and hydrogen, all while consuming agricultural wastes.

Gemma Reguera, MSU microbiologist, has developed bioelectrochemical systems known as microbial electrolysis cells, or MECs, using bacteria to breakdown and ferment agricultural waste into ethanol. Reguera's platform is unique because it employs a second bacterium, which, when added to the mix, removes all the waste fermentation byproducts or nonethanol materials while generating electricity.

Similar microbial fuel cells have been investigated before. However, maximum energy recoveries from corn stover, a common feedstock for biofuels, hover around 3.5 percent. Reguera's platform, despite the energy invested in chemical pretreatment of the corn stover, averaged 35 to 40 percent energy recovery just from the fermentation process, said Reguera, an AgBioResearch scientist who co-authored the paper with Allison Spears, MSU graduate student.

"This is because the fermentative bacterium was carefully selected to degrade and ferment agricultural wastes into ethanol efficiently and to produce byproducts that could be metabolized by the electricity-producing bacterium," Reguera said. "By removing the waste products of fermentation, the growth and metabolism of the fermentative bacterium also was stimulated. Basically, each step we take is custom-designed to be optimal."

The second bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens, generates electricity. The electricity, however, isn't harvested as an output. It is used to generate hydrogen in the MEC to increase the energy recovery process even more, Reguera said.

"When the MEC generates hydrogen, it actually doubles the energy recoveries," she said. "We increased energy recovery to 73 percent. So the potential is definitely there to make this platform attractive for processing agricultural wastes."

Reguera's fuel cells use corn stover treated by the ammonia fiber expansion process, an advanced pretreatment technology pioneered at MSU. AFEX is an already proven method that was developed by Bruce Dale, MSU professor of chemical engineering and materials science.

Dale is currently working to make AFEX viable on a commercial scale.

In a similar vein, Reguera is continuing to optimize her MECs so they, too, can be scaled up on a commercial basis. Her goal is to develop decentralized systems that can help process agricultural wastes. Decentralized systems could be customized at small to medium scales (scales such as compost bins and small silages, for example) to provide an attractive method to recycle the wastes while generating fuel for farms.

I don?t know. But on July 6 ? a holiday-weekend Friday ? the White House posted an Executive Order setting up Napolitano?s Department of Homeland Security as the uber-communications authority during a national emergency with some peculiar little clauses that make me wonder. (Hat tip: John L. Work.)

Obama?s Order creates an Executive Committee for National Security/Emergency Preparedness (NS/EP) under the Secretaries of Defense and Homeland Security, and a Executive Committee Joint Program Office under the Secretary of Homeland Security to support the Executive Committee.

That?s the blah-blah part. The parts enumerating duties and powers, however, despite the same mind-numbing official patois, seem like anything but hot air.

Sec. 5.2. The Secretary of Homeland Security shall:?

(d) receive, integrate, and disseminate NS/EP communications information to the Federal Government and State, local, territorial, and tribal governments, as appropriate, to establish situational awareness, priority setting recommendations, and a common operating picture for NS/EP communications information;

(e) satisfy priority communications requirements through the use of commercial, Government, and privately owned communications resources, when appropriate;

I sure hope Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, et al have read this part. Then again, it is not only ?communications resources? featuring conservative radio hosts that could come under such a wide-open clause. Is DHS now waiting in the wings to seize ? sorry: ?satisfy priority communications requirements through the use of commercial ? and privately owned? radio networks ?when appropriate??

It sounds far-fetched, a midsummer night?s heatstroke of a dream, but consider the context. No White House waits until a hot, holiday Friday to release non-news, and particularly not this White House. In these parlous times of ever-expanding government controls over our privacy and movement, a vague order robustly expanding executive powers over ?communications? ? broadcast speech ?during some undefined crisis sounds all too close to pulp science fiction, or to patterns that should be familiar to us from totalitarian studies.

We already have, in effect, Government Media in the body of a supine White House press corps. That aside, it is the long, long-standing case that radio and TV news networks and cable outlets reliably provide the president with airtime when events call for them. It?s news, after all, and, in an emergency, vital news. Why is the White House now conferring powers on the DHS Secretary, ?when appropriate,? to take control of ?commercial ? and privately owned communications resources??

This is a question Americans need to have answered. This is a question Congress needs to ask. Mitt Romney should seek the answers, too.

The DHS Secretary shall also:

(f) maintain a joint industry-Government center that is capable of assisting in the initiation, coordination, restoration, and reconstitution of NS/EP communications services or facilities under all conditions of emerging threats, crisis, or emergency;

(g) serve as the Federal lead for the prioritized restoration of communications infrastructure and coordinate the prioritization and restoration of communications, including resolution of any conflicts in or among priorities, in coordination with the Secretary of Defense when activities referenced in section 5.1(a) of this order are impacted, consistent with the National Response Framework. ?

As I read Federalese, this means that Janet Napolitano, after having ?satisfied communications priorities through the use of commercial ? and privately owned communications resources? ? read: seized radio networks in a public emergency ? gets to pick and choose who gets to go back on the air and when.

Now, the Secretary of Commerce gets into the act.

Sec. 5.3. The Secretary of Commerce shall: ?

(d) develop plans and procedures concerning radio spectrum allocations, assignments, and priorities for use by agencies and executive offices;

(e) develop, maintain, and publish policies, plans, and procedures for the management and use of radio frequency assignments, including the authority to amend, modify, or revoke such assignments, in those parts of the electromagnetic spectrum assigned to the Federal Government;

Maybe I?m wrong, but I read authority over radio ?assigned to the Federal Government? as including whatever comes under Napolitano?s control, ?when appropropriate? (see above).

The Commerce Secretary also shall:

(f) administer a system of radio spectrum priorities for those spectrum-dependent telecommunications resources belonging to and operated by the Federal Government and certify or approve such radio spectrum priorities, including the resolution of conflicts in or among such radio spectrum priorities during a crisis or emergency.

Later:

Sec. 5.5. With respect to the Intelligence Community, the DNI [Director of National Intelligence], after consultation with the heads of affected agencies, may issue such policy directives and guidance as the DNI deems necessary to implement this order.

This all seems quite power-expanding and alarming. Now, policies driven by the specter of a national crisis are necessarily alarming, but the fear- or chaos-factor of such a crisis itself is not what I mean. There seems to be in this Executive Order more than the provision for uninterupted communications. It seems to be a blueprint for executive control of more power than is necessary ? an excess of power that bodes ill for our liberty.

Heatstroke? Or does anyone agree?

Huawei Ascend Q hands-on (video)

Huawei's taken to the Taste of Chicago event in Chicago to introduce its fresh pair of myTouch phones to the world, but it also had another gem at its booth: the Huawei M660, also known as the Ascend Q. An upcoming smartphone that's poised to hit the US in August, the company plans to launch the device on Cricket as a prepaid handset. It's certainly not high-end, but we weren't exactly expecting it to take the no-contract carrier by storm in that sense. In fact, spec junkies may be a little disappointed at what they see in the portrait QWERTY phone: a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen display, Android 2.3.6, an 800MHz CPU, 1,500mAh battery, microSD storage slot and a 3MP fixed-focus rear camera with no LED flash. The device will also feature Muve Music, a Cricket staple that's starting to be included on most of its smartphone lineup.

The keyboard, while small, actually closely resembles a BlackBerry Bold -- its keys are pretty close together, but each key offers a ridge that gives our fingers a little more travel and makes it easier to type than most other 'boards its size. The one concern we had with the keyboard was its placement of some of the keys -- for instance, there's a messaging access button on the lower right corner of the device, which we accidentally hit on multiple occasions when we were attempting to hit the much smaller enter key just above it. For a Gingerbread device with an 800MHz CPU, the Ascend Q actually runs pretty smooth, with minimal lag when going in between various tasks. And in our limited time with the device, we were able to do a quick SunSpider test, which yielded a score of 4,800. In terms of the user interface, the Gingerbread UI on the Q is reminiscent to the skin we've encountered on previous Huawei phones such as the Honor and Mercury.

Overall, this will likely be a good device for prepaid fans interested in a smaller messaging device. Huawei wasn't able to give us any mention of pricing yet, but we imagine it will be quite a reasonable cost on Cricket. Check out our hands-on gallery and full video below.

Young dad, $15,000 in credit card debt

Carlos Rodriguez, 33, Austin. He's a health care project administrator.

(Money magazine) -- Like many thirtysomethings, Carlos Rodriguez is repairing financial damage from his twenties.

The health care project administrator has $15,000 on credit cards, partly from financing a master's degree, but also from "reckless spending," he admits.

When real estate was hot, he bought a seller-financed house in Austin to use as a rental property, inheriting a property lien that's now $3,600.

And he has grownup obligations: He has an 8-year-old son from a previous relationship and pays $720 a month in child support.

The good news is that Rodriguez recently received a promotion that pushed his salary from $59,000 to $67,000. In addition, he earns $6,500 annually working as a division petty officer in the Navy Reserve. Eventually he'd like to become a chief strategy officer in his field.

He also wants to save more for retirement and his son's college. But he knows the credit card debt is holding him back.

THE PROBLEM

One word: debt. Besides the credit cards and property lien, Rodriguez has an $8,100 auto loan, a $73,000 mortgage on his rental property at a 7% interest rate, and a $139,000 mortgage at 6% on a multifamily home (he lives in half of it and rents the other side).

Plus, he has only $1,000 saved for emergencies.

RODRIGUEZ'S FINANCES

Income: $73,500

Assets: $36,000 in retirement accounts, $1,000 in cash

Goals: Pay off debt; move up in his career

THE ADVICE

Refinance. Rodriguez enjoys being a landlord. His rental income covers three-quarters of the monthly payments on his home loans -- including the one he lives in.

After speaking with local mortgage brokers, Austin financial planner Eric Hehman says Rodriguez could drop the rates on his loans to 4.5% and 4%. By then applying the $370-a-month savings to the high-rate debt, he could wipe it out in just over two years.

Save more. Post-raise, Rodriguez should hike his 403(b) contribution from 3% to 10% of pay. He can also put $150 a month into his emergency fund and $150 into a 529 college savings plan for his son; once his debt is retired in two years, he can boost that emergency savings even more.

Focus on career goals. Rodriguez should reach out to higher-ups in his current organization and broaden his contacts outside his immediate network to include, say, advisory firms that help support chief strategy officers, says Kate Wendleton, president of the Five O'Clock Club, a national career-coaching group.

Says Wendleton: "He might even get hired by one of them."

LESS DEBT, MORE SAVINGS

A refi -- and a raise -- will give Rodriguez the means to wipe out his high-rate debt in 25 months.

Currently, he pays $776 a month in high-interest debt and puts no money away for his son's college.

Monthly contributions post-raise and refinance:

• Cash savings: $150
• Son's 529 plan: $150
