Tim Daly's "Private Practice" character, Pete, was arrested after the mercy killing of a patient.

"Private Practice" was fun while it lasted for Tim Daly. Daly, who has appeared as Pete Wilder on Shonda Rhimes' ABC "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff since its 2007 premiere, revealed Tuesday that his character will not return for season 6.

"Wonderful fans of PPP. Shonda informed my agent today that Pete wont be returning for season 6," the actor, 56, tweeted. "It was a great 5 yrs. R.I.P. Pete Wilder."

There is no word yet on if Daly's character -- who was last seen being released on bail after the mercy killing of a patient -- will return to wrap up his storyline.

Prior to "Private Practice's" sixth season renewal, Daly seemed at ease with leaving the medical drama.

"I feel like I've learned something about myself doing this, which is that being part of a large ensemble is not what I'm best suited to," he told TVGuide.com in January. "The people are lovely and I've had a wonderful time doing this show, but it's not where I feel most comfortable. If we do another season, I'll be happy to be here and I'll dig in and give it everything I've got. If not, then I will go off and go to New York and do some theater and find my way to whatever is next for me."?

A trained palate: Understanding complexities of taste, smell could lead to improved diet

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Researchers at Oregon State University have made some fundamental discoveries about how people taste, smell and detect flavor, and why they love some foods much more than others.

The findings could lead to the Holy Grail of nutrition -- helping people learn to really LIKE vegetables.

As an evolutionary survival mechanism, humans are wired to prefer sweet-tasting foods and avoid bitter substances. In the distant past, that helped us avoid poison and find food that provided energy. Now, it just makes us fat.

In several publications, the most recent in the journal Chemical Senses, scientists have outlined exactly how humans use the nose and tongue to recognize the flavor of foods that are safe to eat. When odor and taste components of foods are congruent, like vanilla and sugar, they are perceived as one sensation which seems to come from the mouth.

"This is a trick that the brain plays on us," said Juyun Lim, an OSU assistant professor of food science and technology. "Vanilla has no taste at all. It's a smell, and the pleasant sensation is coming not from your mouth but from the nose, through the passage way between the back of the mouth and the back of the nose."

When flavors are "incongruent" and not as commonly found together -- like vanilla and salt -- then people believe they are smelling the vanilla from the nose rather than tasting it in the mouth.

"This was an amazing part of our experiments, we did not expect a result so compelling," Lim said. "There has been confusion for centuries about exactly how our senses of taste and smell work. We're finally starting to work this out."

There are actually several senses that relate to the perceived "flavor" of a food, Lim said. These include taste, which resides solely in the tongue; smell, which is exclusively in the nose; and somesthesis, which includes things like touch, temperature, and the burn of hot peppers. Even though the mouth and nose are pretty closely connected, taste and smell do not actually interact with each other there at all.

The real action happens in the brain. It decides what you are eating and whether it is safe or not.

In the brain, there's a taste center, and a smell center, and lurking just behind your eyes is a third center called the orbital frontal cortex, where taste and smell sensations are integrated into the perception of a single flavor. That verdict gets relayed back to the tongue and gives the impression of flavor in the mouth.

If you don't believe it, scientists say, there's a simple experiment to demonstrate the point. Take a sip of your favorite drink while pinching your nose, and see what it tastes like. Don't recognize it? Open your nose, and the familiar taste will reveal itself.

The mechanisms of flavor perception, including those that are both congruent and incongruent, probably evolved as a protective mechanism, Lim said. Foods that were sweet or salty were usually safe to eat and provided needed macronutrients, like carbohydrates and salt, and consequently those flavors came to be desired, she said. Sourness and bitterness, by comparison, often meant food was spoiled or contained toxins and were a warning sign not to eat it.

Those mechanisms served well to prevent a cave dweller from starving or getting poisoned, she said, but unfortunately they are still with us, and in today's world lead straight to ice cream, soft drinks and obesity. But even so, Lim said, flavor perception is still largely a learned behavior.

And if it's learned, she said, we should be able to teach it better, or find ways to work around these evolutionary instincts.

"Hardly anyone really likes the somewhat bitter taste of coffee the first time they drink it, but they like the caffeine," Lim said. "Since the coffee makes them feel energized, they learn to like its flavor."

As the understanding improves of how taste and smell actually work to control our perceptions of flavor, she said, it may be possible to use that knowledge to lead humans toward an improved diet. The research team is investigating whether people can learn to like vegetables and the potential mechanisms underlying that process.

"Many people say they don't like the 'taste' of cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower or brussel sprouts, for instance," Lim said. "But what they are mainly reacting to is the smell of these vegetables, which includes a defensive compound that makes even other animals shy away from eating them. Find a way to help improve their smell, and you'll find a way to make people enjoy eating them."

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? West Virginia State Police said late Saturday they had found four bodies in a wooded area and believe they are those of a missing man, his girlfriend and his two young children.

Police said in a news release that the bodies were found about a mile from where the man's missing 2003 Chevy Venture van was discovered Friday night near Carl, in Nicholas County. Police suspected foul play based on the vehicle's condition.

The news release said that police found the bodies after executing a search warrant.

Authorities said they believe the bodies are those of Steven Hendrix; his girlfriend, Amber Martin; and his two young children, ages 6 and 4. They had not been seen since May 19; Hendrix's daughter, Cheyenne Hendrix, had reported the four missing May 21.

Police have identified James Roy Belknap as a suspect. His whereabouts were not known late Saturday. Police said he may be operating a white Ford F-150 or a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, color unknown.

A police spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment late Saturday..

Knicks sign coach Woodson to multiyear contract

The New York Knicks removed the interim label from Mike Woodson and named him their head coach on Friday.

Woodson signed a multiyear contract extension with the team, ESPN New York reported. The terms were not disclosed.

"I'm very humbled and honored to continue coaching the franchise where I started my NBA career," Woodson said in a statement. "Our goal is to build off the success we had at the end of last season and to continue our quest of bringing an NBA championship to Madison Square Garden."

The Knicks drafted Woodson in 1980.

Woodson took over as the Knicks interim coach after Mike D'Antoni resigned on March 14. The Knicks went 18-6 under Woodson and grabbed the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. They lost to the Miami Heat in the first round.

"Mike took over the team under challenging circumstances and made it clear, starting on Day One, that he was going to hold every player on our roster accountable," Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan said in a statement. "We saw a significant improvement since Mike took over and believe our team will only keep improving under Mike's direction."

Woodson was an assistant coach with the Knicks since August of 2011.

After D'Antoni stepped down, Phil Jackson and John Calipari were rumored to be potential replacements but Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald said in a statement that Woodson is the right choice.

"Mike has the respect of every person in this organization," he said. "He and his staff led the team in an impressive push into the playoffs over the last 24 games and we believe he is the right man to lead the franchise as we move forward."

Woodson coached the Atlanta Hawks from 2004-10 and guided them to three playoff appearances.

As property becomes increasingly complex, the maintenance management procedures become more sophisticated and critical. Good maintenance allows tenants to successfully operate their businesses and thus to pay the rent. Unfortunately, a number of owners take shortcuts or ignore the issues of maintaining the property to save some cash flow. While this may be satisfactory to a point, a poorly maintained property can be easily seen by tenants, customers and potential buyers. Adopt a maintenance management prudent and wise to support the future of the property to the owner.

The financial performance of commercial property is a good balance between maximizing revenue and expenditure control. In fact, revenue should be generated by the rent must be appropriate for the local housing market, but not too high, which can destroy the aggressive mix of rent. High levels of income have a direct impact on the tenant?s ability to trade. High levels of rental tenants will also travel to other nearby properties as soon as possible. If your local real estate market has a lot of empty space, must be very careful about how to manage and optimize the rent and tenant relations.

Researchers at NYU School of Medicine have, for the first time, identified a single gene that simultaneously controls inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer.

"This was certainly an unexpected finding," said principal investigator Robert J. Schneider, PhD, the Albert Sabin Professor of Molecular Pathogenesis, associate director for translational research and co-director of the Breast Cancer Program at NYU Langone Medical Center. "It is rather uncommon for one gene to have two very different and very significant functions that tie together control of aging and inflammation. The two, if not regulated properly, can eventually lead to cancer development. It's an exciting scientific find."

The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, appears online ahead of print today in Molecular Cell and is scheduled for the July 13 print issue.

For decades, the scientific community has known that inflammation, accelerated aging and cancer are somehow intertwined, but the connection between them has remained largely a mystery, Dr. Schneider said. What was known, due in part to past studies by Schneider and his team, was that a gene called AUF1 controls inflammation by turning off the inflammatory response to stop the onset of septic shock. But this finding, while significant, did not explain a connection to accelerated aging and cancer.

When the researchers deleted the AUF1 gene, accelerated aging occurred, so they continued to focus their research efforts on the gene. Now, more than a decade in the making, the mystery surrounding the connection between inflammation, advanced aging and cancer is finally being unraveled.

The current study reveals that AUF1, a family of four related genes, not only controls the inflammatory response, but also maintains the integrity of chromosomes by activating the enzyme telomerase to repair the ends of chromosomes, thereby simultaneously reducing inflammation, preventing rapid aging and the development of cancer, Dr. Schneider explained.

"AUF1 is a medical and scientific trinity," Dr. Schneider said. "Nature has designed a way to simultaneously turn off harmful inflammation and repair our chromosomes, thereby suppressing aging at the cellular level and in the whole animal."

With this new information, Dr. Schneider and colleagues are examining human populations for specific types of genetic alterations in the AUF1 gene that are associated with the co-development of certain immune diseases, increased rates of aging and higher cancer incidence in individuals to determine exactly how the alterations manifest and present themselves clinically.

Doug O'Neill, the trainer of Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another, was suspended 45 days after one of his horses had an excessive level of carbon dioxide, but the punishment won't start before he saddles the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

The suspension comes in the final weeks of I'll Have Another's attempt to become horse racing's 12th Triple Crown winner and first since Affirmed 34 years ago. The colt trained by O'Neill won the Derby on May 5 and then took the Preakness on Saturday.

The California Horse Racing Board met in closed session Thursday at Betfair Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif., to consider the recommended decision of a hearing officer in O'Neill's case. The board agreed with the officer's recommendations, which included the maximum punishment and fine ? $15,000 ? for the trainer, who turned 44 on Thursday.

While elevated carbon dioxide is associated with "milkshaking," the officer agreed with O'Neill that his horse Argenta had not been fed a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, sugar and electrolytes that enhances performance and combats fatigue. The officer did not indicate what might have caused the overage.

"I'm gratified that the CHRB found that I did not "milkshake" a horse or engage in any intentional conduct that would result in an elevated TC02 level," O'Neill said in a statement issued after the ruling. "I plan on examining and reviewing all of my options following the Belmont Stakes, but right now I plan on staying focused on preparing for and winning the Triple Crown."

The suspension comes at a time when racing is under heavy scrutiny for the way horses are prepared for their races.

O'Neill had vigorously proclaimed his innocence in the 2010 case from the beginning, and said he spent $250,000 defending himself.

"I know I didn't milkshake a horse. None of us around the barn milkshaked any horses," O'Neill said Wednesday. "You got to have rules and I respect rules, but when you get faulty science involved, it costs a lot of money unfortunately, but you've got to fight it and that's what we're doing."

O'Neill was cited by the racing board after Argenta tested for a high level of TCO2 ? a Class 3 violation ? in its blood after finishing eighth in a race at Del Mar on Aug. 25, 2010. The horse is co-owned by Mark Verge, the CEO of Santa Anita race track and O'Neill's childhood friend.

The officer found there were no suspicious betting patterns in the race and that there was no evidence of any intentional acts on the part of O'Neill in connection with the incident.

However before the hearing, the parties had stipulated that the Maddy Laboratory at UC Davis detected an excess level of TCO2 in the horse's blood sample, and CHRB Rule 1887 holds a trainer to be ultimately responsible for the condition of a horse.

Based on that rule and mitigating factors, the hearing officer recommended that O'Neill should be suspended for 45 days, with an additional 135 days stayed for 18 months, provided he commits no further Class 1, 2 or 3 violations in any state. The racing board agreed with the recommendations.

CHRB executive director Kirk Breed will decide when O'Neill's suspension will begin, but it will be no sooner than July 1.

The Jockey Club has said that elevated total carbon dioxide levels, regardless of cause, are violations of the rules and penalties for excessive TCO2 are severe. It urges trainers and their veterinarians to work closely to identify any procedure or practices that may elevate such levels in horses.
